What is Gout?
Gout is a type of metabolic disorder where increased uric acid in the blood leads to the formation crystal deposits, called tophi, and is generally the result of dietary or genetic factors. These crystals deposit in joints, tendons and soft tissue in various body sites, typically the first toe, knee, elbow and/or behind the ears, causing irritation and inflammation in a localised area. This irritation leads to inflammatory arthritis and eventually bone destruction following a number of repeated attacks. Gout typically presents as acute, repetitive attacks of a red-hot, swollen and very tender joint.
