What is Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) of the Knee Joint?

Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is a pathological condition primarily observed in adolescents, characterised by the insufficient blood supply to the joint surface, leading to the detachment of a small segment of bone or cartilage from the rest of the joint structure. This detachment can result in the formation of a loose body within the joint, posing significant challenges to joint function and mobility.

In younger cases, the detached segment may have the potential to heal on its own over time, especially if prompt intervention is initiated. However, in cases where the condition progresses into adulthood, the detached segment is more likely to continue to separate, leading to the formation of a loose body within the joint space.

When OCD affects the knee joint, it typically manifests as a gradual onset of knee pain. This pain may vary in intensity and can be exacerbated by activities that involve weight-bearing or joint movement. In some instances, individuals with OCD in the knee may experience episodes where the joint “locks” or feels stuck, limiting normal range of motion. Additionally, swelling around the affected knee joint may occur, further contributing to discomfort and functional impairment.

Conservative management options may include rest, activity modification, physical therapy, and pain management to alleviate symptoms and promote healing. Early detection and appropriate management are essential in managing OCD to prevent long-term complications and preserve joint health and mobility.
