What is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis refers to an abnormally excessive curvature of the mid back. The spine was designed to have natural curvatures in the neck, mid and low back which act as shock absorbers to help support the weight of the head and torso, however a kyphosis occurs when this natural mid back curvature is larger than normal. There are a number of causes for an increased kyphosis including aging, arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, Scheuermann’s Disease, an old injury and scoliosis. A mild increase in kyphosis may be asymptomatic, however a severe increase in curvature may cause pain throughout the spine, breathing difficulties and fatigue.
