What is Scaphoid Fracture?

The scaphoid is a carpal (wrist bone) located at the base of the thumb. A fracture of the scaphoid typically follows a direct trauma such as a fall onto an outstretched hand. Symptoms include pain and tenderness in the area just below the base of the thumb made worse with thumb use. Complications with the healing process of a scaphoid fracture are common due to a disruption in blood flow to part of the bone which presents as pain over the area three to six months following the initial incident.
